Rules for Recess and for Life

printable_rules_verses-sample-picOne of the reasons I love recess and physical activity like sports so much is because we learn so many valuable life lessons through PLAY!

These lessons are countless and include confidence, communication, problem solving, respect, cooperation… the list goes on.

That said, there are 4 key rules we live by here at Recess & Results that can easily be implemented with your family and the kids you lead as well.

  1. Always try your best! The bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 9:10 “whatever the activity in which you engage, do it with all your ability”.   Anytime we make the decision to participate in something, whether it be a physical activity, a school project, volunteer work, or chores at home, we need to remind ourselves to try our best.  We may not always be the best, but we can try our best and that is pleasing to the Lord!
  1. Respect your elders! The bible tells us to “obey your elders and submit to them” in Hebrews 13:17 and recess offers many opportunities to practice this valuable life lesson!  Recess instructors reinforce this by reminding participants there is no talking with the instructor is talking, and that it is very important to follow directions.  Anyone leading children can reinforce this rule in the same way.
  1. Treat others how you want to be treated! In other words, respect yourself and your friends at all times.  Luke 6:31 tells us to “Do unto others as you would have them to do unto to you” and Mark 12:31 reminds us to “love our neighbor as yourself.”  This is reinforced through cooperation in group activities, encouraging children to include others that may look different than them, and demonstrating random acts of kindness in everyday life.
  1. Have Fun! Jesus wants us to enjoy life and the blessings He has given us!  Proverbs 17:22 tells us that “A joyful heart is good medicine” and that is certainly rings true in the laughter you hear on a playground!  Psalm 118:24 teaches us “This is the day the Lord has made REJOICE, and be glad it in”.  We are blessed in countless ways in life.  One way to praise the Lord for these blessings is to have a joyful heart whether is be when playing with friends, when eating dinner with our families, or saying our bedtime prayers.
