NOTE: If you don’t have a parachute, you can use a large sheet instead.
Calm the storm: Grab your parachute and spread it out in a large open space. Ask all participants to take a spot, evenly distributed around the parachute, and to grab on to the side of the parachute where they are standing. Show the kids how to make small, medium, or large movements with the parachute to make “waves” in the sea. Tell the story about how Jesus calms the storm (Matthew 8:23 – 27) throughout this activity, and encourage movements that match the story. “Jesus got on a boat and disciples followed Him.” (Everyone pretends to step into the boat). They started going on the water (calmly shake the parachute for small waves). Jesus went to sleep. Then a storm came and the waves started getting bigger, and Bigger, and BIGGER! The disciples were scared and the boat was rocking (kids rock side to side as they move the parachute). The disciples went and woke Jesus, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. (FREEZE! the sea was still) 27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” **Talk with the kids about Jesus has the power to calm the storms in our own lives also. All they need to do is ask for help 🙂
Repeat the story and see if they kids can remember and fill in the blanks + actions.
